Audio described exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria

The National Gallery of Victoria is currently holding an exhibition of Australian artist John Brack’s work at its Ian Potter Centre. As part of the exhibition, two Saturday afternoon tours will be held to audio describe the works for visitors with vision impairments.

Audio description of dance in the UK

In the arts, dance is often the forgotten artform when it comes to audio description. It’s easy to understand how a person with vision impairment could enjoy the description of plays, opera and musical theatre, but for dance, the benefits aren’t as apparent.

Parramatta’s Riverside Theatres is offering discounted theatre tickets to its upcoming Blind, As You See It production.People connected with the vision impaired community can see the production for just $15 at its performances in early April.

Living in a Sensory World exhibit at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney

Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum, together with Vision Australia, has launched a new exhibition for 2009 called Living in a Sensory World.  The exhibit is also supported by Visions of Australia, an Australian Government Program supporting touring exhibitions by providing funding assistance for the development and touring of cultural material across Australia.

RNIB launches Bollywood Project

The UK-based Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) has launched its audio description (AD) project covering Bollywood movies. 

The Bollywood industry produces the largest number of films globally and is known for producing song and dance visual extravaganzas. The project aims to bring AD to these movies.  The project also reflects that the UK has a large Indian population.  In 2007 Bollywood movies generated £16 million at the UK box office.

Record Breaking Les Miserables

VocalEyes UK celebrated its 10th anniversary of describing the arts by setting the record for the largest number of blind and partially sighted people attending an audio described theatre performance of Les Misérables at the Queens Theatre in London’s West End.  168 blind and partially sighted record breakers attended the performance and they are now just waiting for validation by Guinness. Stay tuned for confirmation of the Record.

Access All Areas (AAA) Film Festival

Celebrate in November the Don’t DIS my ABILITY campaign and International Day of People with a Disability at the Access All Areas (AAA) Film Festival - NSW’s first fully accessible travelling film festival. All films will be audio described, close-captioned and wheelchair accessible.
